Lorelei Byrne, 8th grader at Staunton Jr. High, participated in a poetry contest last year put on by The American Library of Poetry. She was notified earlier this year that her poem was one that was going to be published! This nationwide contest receives thousands of submissions every year and only about 20% of the submissions are selected for publication.
Congrats, Lorelei!

Ms. Tharp's 5th grade art students were busy at work during our E-Learning day on Tuesday. Check out some of these awesome guided drawings they completed!

Our 5th grade ELA students produced descriptive sentences using examples of figurative language to create snow globes. There were several examples that illustrated some of their favorite things about winter: sledding, ice skating, snowball fights, hibernating, & snow days! Also, a friendly reminder to stay warm this week! ❄️

Dear Staunton Families,
Today, Tuesday, January 9th, 2024, the Staunton School District received a threat towards school personnel who are no longer employed with the district. The Staunton Police Department was immediately contacted and began working in conjunction with administration to ensure the safety and security of students and staff. It was quickly determined by law enforcement that there was not an immediate threat or danger to students and staff at school, and the School District has been able to continue operating as normal and will dismiss students as normal.
However, out of an abundance of caution, all extracurricular practices and activities scheduled for this evening are canceled. The events will be rescheduled. School operations will run as normal tomorrow, Wednesday, January 10th, 2024.
The School District will continue to work closely with local law enforcement officials to ensure student and staff safety.
As always, we appreciate your support for the Staunton School District.
Sincerely,
Staunton Schools Administration

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Students,
As we move into the second semester, please make every effort to make attendance a priority. The second semester is a busy time with Illinois State required testing, PROM, graduation, promotion, etc. We want to make sure that students are in school and preparing to close out the year in a positive manner.
The district also receives a portion of our overall rating from the state from student attendance. If possible, please schedule doctor appointments and vacations to a time that does not interfere with your student being able to attend their classes. We understand that situations arise and we do not want you to send your child to school if they are suffering from illness.
We are excited to work with families and students for a successful completion to the school year and we are requesting your cooperation helping with your children’s success by having them be present for the second semester.
Thank you for your continued efforts and support of the Staunton School District. #LeadChallengeAchieve
Sincerely,
Staunton School Administration

We are seeing an uptick in student absences compared to last year at this same time. While we do not encourage your child to come to school sick, we do encourage them to be in attendance. The State of Illinois allows 10 excused absences per school year. Anything beyond that can result in truancy referrals.
When students aren't in the building, they miss information, assignments, and assessments. We have noticed that many of those students who are absent frequently have lower grades and academic performance.
