Illinois State Seal of Biliteracy

Staunton CUSD#6 is proud to announce that as of the 2023/2024 school year, we will be allowing our students to have the opportunity to qualify for the Illinois State Seal of Biliteracy.  A student who achieves this recognition will find the award on their diploma and their high school transcript.  This official recognition shows that a student has shown a high level of proficiency in English as well as in one or more additional languages.

This program encourages bilingualism and rewards students' achievements, since colleges and universities must accept the Seal of Biliteracy as the equivalent to two years of world language coursework taken during high school for admission purposes into their programs.  All public colleges and universities in the State of Illinois are also required to translate the State Seal into course credit at their institutions.

A student can also receive the Illinois State Seal of Commendation, if their score is below the state seal requirements.  A student must achieve a 480 ELA score on the SAT as well as an intermediate high score on the ACTFL, STAMP4S, or NEWL test to receive the Seal of Biliteracy and a 480 ELA score on the SAT as well as an intermediate low score on the ACTFL, STAMP4S, or NEWL to receive the Seal of Commendation.

Students will be responsible for the cost of the ACTFL, STAMP4S, or NEWL test unless they qualify for it to be free through the district.  For further information, please contact Ms. Griffith at 618.635.3838 or cgriffith@stauntonschools.org.
