The High School students experienced a successful Prom and Post-Prom Saturday, April 27. Over 240 students attended both events. Thank you to Class Sponsors Mrs. Kari Crask & Mr. Larry Caldieraro for organizing such a successful event. Also thank you to Mrs. Jennifer Hailstone and her committee for a fantastic job decorating the KC Hall/Crystal Ballroom. A big thank you also goes out to the Post Prom Committee. Their fundraising over the last year has raised over $13,000 for the students in attendance to receive in food, cash, and prizes. I encourage everyone to support the Post-Prom Committee as they soon will be having fundraisers for the 2013-14 Prom starting very soon.
The PTO and Sports Boosters have also been busy with fundraisers. The PTO raised money for AR books, whiteboards and smartboards and is planning on adding new playground equipment to the playground. They are also assisting with the end of the year AR party. The Sports Boosters have raised money for all new scoreboards. Basketball, baseball and softball scoreboards have been installed. Plans are currently being made to purchase a new football/track scoreboard.
Parents and community members have been very generous with their time and money with these projects. Our community businesses also have been very supportive of all these activities and projects. The Board of Education, staff, students, and administration greatly appreciate the contributions to our schools.
In addition, the Staunton Education Foundation has awarded mini grants again this year to teachers and will also be giving scholarships to graduating seniors. They have continued to support and purchase materials for the classroom. There contributions are also greatly appreciated.
We would like to recognize and congratulate Ms. Brianna Bohlen for being awarded Madison Telephone Company’s Teacher of the Year.
There are many changes coming to our schools in the next few years. Beginning in 2014-2015, the state is preparing to replace the Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT) and Prairie State Achievement Test (PSAE) with the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Career (PARCC) assessments. The PARCC is a computer-based assessment in Math and Language Arts that will be administered twice a year. The PARCC assessments will align to the Common Core Standards. Schools have a year to expand their network capacity to meet the demands of PARCC.
The Governor presented his budget proposal this past March. His proposal plan would pare another $300 million from K-12 education out of the General State Aid (GSA) line item and the other half taken out of the transportation reimbursement funding system. These cuts with the previous reduction in GSA since 2011 would be a loss of $723,500 for our school district. In the last three years, from 2010-2013, our school district has lost $1,260,000 in general revenue. In the next few weeks, lawmakers will be crafting the budget, reprioritizing the Governor’s budget.
We will have the Governor’s and legislator’s names, addresses and e-mails on our school web page with a draft letter encouraging full funding for our schools. We ask you to contact our Governor and legislators encouraging them to fully fund GSA and transportation.
Staunton Community Unit School District #6 insures equal opportunities are offered to students, regardless of race, color, national origins, age, gender, religion, or disability. Board of Education policies are in place, designated to eliminate the existence of any barriers regarding accessibility and/or participation in any programs, including career and technical education (vocational) programs.
Questions regarding educational opportunities may be directed to: Kyle A. Hlafka, Superintendent, Staunton CUSD #6, 801 N. Deneen St., Staunton, IL 62088 (618-635-2962).
