Dear Staunton CUSD #6 Families:

The school district’s highest priority is the safety of our students and staff. In order to maintain a safe environment, it is necessary that we practice emergency and crisis response plans, including a Lockdown Drill. We are required by state law to conduct a minimum of one lockdown drill per school year that involves the presence of law enforcement officials to ensure that our students know their role during a potential threat.

The school district works in cooperation with the Staunton Police Department to conduct an annual lockdown drill that is designed to protect students from danger in and around a school.  Police and administration walk through the building to ensure that staff and students are following the appropriate procedures. The drill requires students to sit quietly and out of sight (away from windows and doors). The types of emergencies that could require a school to lockdown are the possible presence of an intruder or a dangerous situation taking place in the vicinity of the school.

We hope that we will never have to utilize this procedure in a real situation, but it is important for all staff and students to understand the procedures in place to keep individuals safe at school.

Parents and guardians have the opportunity to exempt their child for any reason from participating in the lockdown drill.  If you would like your child to opt out of this lockdown drill, please fill out the linked form and return it to the office by Monday, November 1, 2021.  The drill is scheduled for Tuesday, November 9, 2021.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your child’s school office.

Thank you!
