News from Staunton CUSD #6

by
Kyle A. Hlafka, Superintendent

The last day of the first semester of the 2011-2012 school year will be Wednesday, December 21st.  High school exams will be December 20th and 21st.  School will dismiss early December 21st.  A. R. Graiff will dismiss at 1:45 p.m. and the Staunton campus will dismiss at 2:00 p.m.

Winter Break begins December 22nd.   Staff will return Tuesday, January 3rd, for inservice.  Students will return Wednesday, January 4th.

The High School Band/Choral Holiday Concert is Friday, December 9th in the New Gym at  7:00 p.m.  The Junior High (grades 5-8) Band/Choral Holiday Concert is Tuesday, December 20th in the New Gym at 7:00 p.m.  The Elementary (grades K-5) is Wednesday, December 21st at 9:00 a.m. in the New School Gym.

The Fall extracurricular activities have ended and we have started our Winter activities. Check out the Staunton CUSD #6 website www.stauntonschools.org for schedules on all of our extracurricular events.

Two significant projects were completed in the last few months.  New playground equipment was installed at A. R. Graiff and Staunton Elementary.  The equipment was funded by donations.  The PTO, Hannah Keeton Memorial (McKay Auto Parts), Staunton Education Foundation, Junior High Quest, and Junior High Sports Concessions funded the project.  A thank you to Sam Maedge for donating time and equipment to spread the mulch.  The second project was roof repair/new shingles for two additions at the Elementary School.  This project was completed the third week of November.

The School District is developing a Safety Program.  A committee of staff employees has been meeting to develop a safety program to prevent injury and illness.  It is our goal to provide a safe and healthy environment for all students and employees.

Although we are near to the end of the first semester, I would still like to introduce the new teachers to Staunton CUSD #6 for the 2011-12 school year.  For Staunton High School, we have Kadie Benz, High School Math, and Ashely Walden, High School English.  In the Elementary we have added a new ½ time Pre-K program at A.R. Graiff.  The new Pre-K teacher is Lauren DeCourcey.  The South Macoupin Service Area for Special Education has added a new teacher, Elizabeth Crawford, a new social worker, Jennifer Huelsmann, and a new Supervisor, Alison Storm.  Effective July 1, 2012, South Macoupin Service Area will become its own legal entity.

There are several changes impacting schools by new legislation.  Education reform ties teacher performance evaluations under the Performance Evaluations Reform Act of 2010 to teacher certifications, employment, and dismissal.  Changes in federal law have directed schools to focus more help on all students by addressing their learning needs within the general education setting.  These new laws emphasize the importance of providing high quality, research based instruction and intervention, and hold schools accountable for adequate yearly progress of all students.  This process of providing interventions to students who are in need of academic or behavioral support is called Response to Intervention (RtI).

The State of Illinois has adopted the Common Core Standards in Language Arts and Math.  This will impact the curriculum and type of instruction students will receive.  The state testing program will also change in the next few years.  We are currently using our School Improvement days (12:30 p.m. dismissals) to prepare teachers and staff for the upcoming changes. The adoption of the Common Core Standards is to emphasize college and career readiness for all students.  There are many changes coming and hopefully, these changes will help better prepare our students for an ever changing world.

With Winter, also comes inclement weather.  We will be using our Alert-Now system to keep you informed of any school or calendar changes.  If your telephone number has recently changed, please notify your principal’s office to provide your new number.

Staunton CUSD #6 wishes all a safe and happy holiday season!
